A Year in Review: 2018

By | News

2018 was yet another successful and rewarding year for the Murphy family, supporting a range of charities.

The Murphy Family Foundation was established in 2015 to allow the Murphy family to make meaningful contributions to those less fortunate.

Since its inception, the Murphy Family Foundation has donated over $1.5 million to various charities.

While the Foundation supports a number of charities and programs, the Murphy family is especially interested in supporting organisations where their funding can have a catalytic impact, such as leading to major government funding. The family also considers providing multi-year funding as well as funding for research, infrastructure, and capital expenditure.

The Murphy Family Foundation makes grant decisions on projects that:

  • Address a specific need
  • Can demonstrate impact
  • Are established and have a proven track record
  • Have lower administrative costs
  • Do not promote a particular faith or religion

The endeavours undertaken always resonate personally with individual family members, and the Murphy Family hopes to grow through their philanthropy so that their giving will continue in perpetuity by future generations.

The Murphy family tend to go above and beyond donating funds when possible, including Rory Murphy participating once again in the annual Vinnies CEO Sleepout. It is the commitment and dedication from the family that sees charities benefiting from the foundation’s contributions for many years.

The family intends 2019 to be another generous year for the Murphy Family Foundation and look forward to working with many organisations.

Murphy Family Foundation donates books to Nauru Community Library

By | News

In early 2018, Canstruct International facilitated the Murphy Family Foundation’s donation of $7000 worth of books for children and young adults to the Nauruan Community. The books were delivered to the Nauru Community Library at an event organised by Canstruct that hosted students and staff from local schools. Director of the University of South Pacific, Ms Alamanda Lauti, was presented with around 400 books by Canstruct Founding Director, Robin Murphy OAM, and Canstruct Director, Adrian Murphy.

“I am very happy to be able to gift these books to the children of Nauru and hope they enjoy many years of pleasure from reading the variety of stories now available,” said Mr Robin Murphy.

A diverse range of fictional and non-fictional books were offered across a wide range of topics and themes, including history, science, and geography, alongside modern classics such as Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter, and the Star Wars series. The books represented around fourteen different languages alongside the native Nauru language Doreein Naoero, including Somali, Farsi, Urdu, Persian and English. Canstruct employees who attended the event enjoyed delving deeply into the bundles of books alongside the children and were impressed to find a copy of The Hunger Games in Arabic. Canstruct and the Murphy Family Foundation are excited to see these books be enjoyed by the residents of Nauru for many years.

Canstruct supports Veterans at Legacy Defence Ball

By | News

Canstruct International has again joined forces with the Murphy Family Foundation to raise funds and awareness for Legacy, an organisation dedicated to providing services to families of veterans suffering after the injury or death of a loved one, during or after their defence force service. The support Legacy offers includes the protection of individuals and family’s basic needs, assistance through bereavement, advocating for family’s entitlements, and helping them thrive. Legacy currently cares for more than 60,000 beneficiaries and has more than 4,000 active volunteers around Australia, who act as mentors to the widows and their families.

Canstruct’s CEO Rory Murphy, alongside staff from Canstruct and the Murphy Family Foundation, recently attended the Legacy Defence Charity Ball to support the families of veterans. The annual event hosts corporate guests and the Australian Defence Organisation to educate, inform and inspire, whilst raising much-needed funds. This year, the event raised over $150,000 that Legacy will dedicate to enhancing the lives and opportunities of the families it supports. Canstruct and the Murphy Family Foundation were honoured to join Legacy for the night and contribute to the fundraising. The Murphy Family Foundation is proud to continue to support causes that are close to the Murphy family’s hearts.

Canstruct CEO shares the benefits of giving

By | News

In November last year, Canstruct and Murphy Family Foundation Founder, Robin Murphy OAM, was a special guest panellist at the America Chamber of Commerce’s Thanksgiving luncheon. The panel was hosted by KDPR Director, Kristin Devitt and discussed the business benefits of gratitude and giving. Joined alongside Robin Murphy on the panel were representatives from Suncorp, Ronald McDonald House, Mater Hospital, and Google.

Robin Murphy discussed his perspective on the importance of supporting good causes, both as a corporation and as an individual. He enlightened guests about the ‘warm inner glow’ that giving produces and the other benefits including motivation and inspiration of staff, gaining respect from clients, noblesse oblige, and government approval. Robin shed light on how giving is an opportunity to learn new things and see other people’s perspectives. He also shared his personal experience visiting the Lockhart River to see the Puuya Foundation’s construction of an early years learning centre, a project the Murphy Family Foundation supported through administration and donations. He said it was inspiring to see the hard work of volunteers and staff, and rewarding to see the impact his donation made on the community.
